Hernias
A hernia occurs when an organ of fatty tissue squeezes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue called fascia. The most common types of hernia are inguinal (inner groin), incisional (resulting from an incision), femoral (outer groin), umbilical (belly button) and hiatal (upper stomach).
Anything that causes an increase in pressure in the abdomen can cause a hernia, including:
- Lifting heavy weights without stabilizing the abdominal muscles.
- Diarrhea or constipation.
- Persistent coughing or sneezing.
- Straining during bowel movements or urination due to BPH.
- Being overweight with obesity, poor nutrition and smoking can weaken muscles and make hernias more likely.
Treatment of hernias can be via open surgery, laparoscopic surgery and robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Raghavan specializes in robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery with mesh insertion resulting in less postoperative pain and significant advantages with regards to an early return to normal activities.
